Vehicle Description For Sale with an asking price of $49,000:
An unusual, interesting, and unique True and actual 1969 Mustang Mach 1, with the GT trim package that has been highly customized and upgraded from front to rear.
My wife purchased The Scarlet Lady, my dream car, in March of 2009 for $8000 and I stopped documenting after I had spent an additional $50K.
I have documented most of the investment and improvements in my build book, but since the time of my last entry I have spent at least an additional $15K on upgrades, repair, and improvements.
I am the fourth owner of Scarlet, and she was purchased from number three in Easley, South Carolina.
She was purchased new at the Ford dealership in Easley, and I have some of the previous titles.
Unfortunately, I believe owner number 1 or number two unwittingly destroyed the build sheet that should have been located under the back seat so I do not know of anyway to prove that this MIGHT be a one of one car.
Scarlet was born in April of 1969 at the Dearborn auto plant and according to her paint code on the fender tag she was originally Champagne Gold.
According to her birth certificate (VIN) she is an M code car, meaning she SHOULD have had a 351 Windsor motor.
Here is where things get interesting.
At the time of my purchase Scarlet had a 351 Cleveland backed by a C-6 three speed automatic.
This did not mean anything to me at the time but the more I learned and researched the odder this became as the block stamping from the Cleveland foundry identifies this block as a 1970 D0VE motor and the 351C did not enter production cars until the 1970 model year.
A year goes by and I contact owner #3 who had no idea how the 351C came to be in Scarlet and other than a name we do not know anything about owners 1 and 2 and I cannot find them via the Internet, despite having titles with names on them.
The best way to describe the restoration of Scarlet is by describing the systems.
Electrical System - Scarlet was sent out for rewiring in 2010 using a Painless system that has served me very well since that time.
Virtually every electrical component you can name has been replaced except for the headlight switch and the clock.
100 Amp chrome alternator, voltage regulator, gear reduction starter, rebuilt instrument panel, console cigarette lighter.
But note that the gage packs and the dash are the original.
By the way this is the original console and shifter, but the shifter was rebuilt so that it is as tight as new.
Power Train - Rebuilt 351C motor that is making an estimated 450 horse at the rear wheels and 513 horse at the flywheel according to the original build calculations but unfortunately, I have lost my cam card.
Scarlet was bored.
030 over and the cast iron heads were reworked with valves, springs, and hydraulic rollers.
Scarlet has the same single plane aluminum Edelbrock Torker II intake as she had at my purchase, but I have topped that with a Holley Sniper fuel injection system, with the necessary high pressure fuel pump and lines.
Scarlet has a Ford AOD transmission that has been prepared race ready but has four forward gears and is cooled by an external cooler in front of the radiator.
The original Ford 9 has been rebuilt and beefed up with.
373 gears.
Braking system - Scarlet was born with front disc and rear drums but in the last two years she has had a rear drum to disc conversion.
I was not satisfied with the stopping power and a new brake booster and master cylinder were installed.
But this 351C does not make great vacuum and I still was not satisfied so an electrical vacuum booster was also added and all of this was topped off with new plumbing.
Cooling System - I did not have the heart to do away with the old school mechanical fan, but I had to do something for additional cooling, so a custom fan shroud was built to house the mechanical fan.
Scarlet has a high flow aluminum water pump, four core aluminum radiator, an under drive crank pulley, and I added pusher electric fans to increase air flow and cooling power.
All of this keeps her at a steady 180 degrees.
Suspension and Steering System - It is all new, but I stayed with the original Ford design, only made upgrades.
The front control arms were replaced, I upgraded to heavy duty springs, and added the heavy-duty torsion/sway bar.
I also upgraded the rear to heavy-duty five leaf springs from the original four leaf and I added a rear torsion/sway bar.
I have never liked the original Ford (leaky) power steering system, so I upgraded by adding the gear box from the 1988 Toyota 4x4 and this gear box is driven by a Saginaw style power steering pump.
All the steering components were replaced; center link, drag link, tie rod ends, etc.
To dampen all this spring, I added Monroe air adjustable shocks to the rear.
I am old school and like the rake of the car as I currently have it set.
Paint System - I did not have access to a rotisserie or the facilities so Scarlet WAS NOT a frame off restoration, but the only thing that I have not done is to replace all the old body bushings.
Scarlet received a 4000 PSI water blast with a zero tip to remove all the old undercoating and then her underbody was coated with POR-15.
Her motor and most of the electrical components were removed to grit blast the engine compartment and this was restored to the original finish.
This car was very straight when I bought it and has only a 3 circle of Bondo in the passenger's quarter to repair a large dent at about the body crease line.
The driver's side fender could have been repaired but I chose rather to buy a reproduction fender from CJ Pony parts.
I did not like the condition of the hood or the rear deck lid, so I purchased them from salvage from a 1970.
She received her current 2003 Chevrolet Victory Red paint job and the embedded black graphics in 2013.
I also never liked the strip package on the 69 so I paid $1500 for refurbished rocker panel moldings from a 70.
She was touched up again in 2018-2019 and as this car has ALWAYS been kept under cover, I would not hesitate to do touch up work again, using the right professional.
The base coats were awesome and those graphics you see are seamless, but I have never been entirely happy with the job the painter did with the clear as I think too much hardener was used.
I have not put 5000 miles on this car in 13 years and she desires to go to an owner that will use her regularly and not just for car shows.
Having done all this work there are still some upgrades, improvements, corrections, etc.
that I still think should be done as there are things I am not satisfied with:
While the stereo has been upgraded to a modern-ish Kenwood system with an amplifier in the trunk, a previous detailer broke off Scarlet's antenna and the replacement needs put on.
Because of 1982 Ford AOD transmission is mated to a 1970 351C motor I have never taken the time to find a speedometer cable that has the drive gear of the AOD and the square spline of the 1969 speedometer.
Replace all the body bushings to eliminate the few annoying squeaks.
Replace the two-drive belt pulley system for alternator and power steering pump with a new serpentine system.
Rebuild the original clock and rebuild the original steering wheel Rework the aluminum gas peddle as she currently has only about of Wide Open Throttle.
